Crescent Hill
History
Crescent Hill is a neighborhood steeped in rich history, dating all the way back to the 1780’s, with its original road, known today as Frankfort Avenue. The neighborhood became a thriving suburb in 1849 with the launch of the Louisville Frankfort Railroad, and prominent Louisville residents chose this area to erect their lavish summer homes. Built in 1869, the Peterson-Dumesnil House still stands today, located at 301 S. Peterson Avenue, right in the heart of Crescent Hill. This Italianate home was used by the Peterson and Dumesnil families as a summer residence for six generations before being sold to the Board of Education in 1948.At what is currently well-known as Crescent avenue, the Fairgrounds stood in 1853, and for 20 years state and national expositions were hosted there. In 1879 the Crescent Hill Reservoir and Park were constructed and these attractions remain a draw for residents to this day
Residents of Crescent Hill have always been dedicated to the betterment of their community. Designed to encourage other wealthy families to buy in Crescent Hill, “Beautiful Crescent Hill” was published in 1908 by the Crescent Hill Improvement Club. Other clubs sprang up also, such as the Crescent Hill Forward Club which addressed neighborhood problems and the Crescent Hill Community Club which fostered community spirit. By 1922, the neighborhood of Crescent Hill was annexed to the City of Louisville, but these types of efforts live on today in the works of the Crescent Hill Community Council.
Today, Crescent Hill is known for its flourishing art galleries, fine restaurants and neighborhood atmosphere.
